Irene Reed (Iitaruaq) and the Eskimo Spirit is the story of a mysterious vision that revealed itself at a critical moment in a woman's life and guided that woman toward a career as a pioneering linguist and teacher of Alaska Native languages. As Irene Iitaruaq Reed struggled with long-term plans early in her professional life, an Eskimo Spirit appeared in a frosty window one cold winter night and left Irene with no doubt about the path she should take.

Over the course of the next several years, Irene had a hand in designing the modern practical writing system for Yup'ik, in publishing the first modern scientific grammar of Yup'ik, and in starting bilingual programs in village schools. Most significantly, however, she was a mentor who inspired so many others to devote their lives to the documentation and teaching of Alaska Native languages.

Even many of those who were closest to this remarkable woman will be surprised and amused when reading this story as told by Irene's sister Gladys Dart. The text was translated into Yup'ik by Anna Jacobson and is presented here in a bilingual facing-page format.
